IT WAS the Royal Mint’s 2011 series of special edition 50 pence coins to mark the London 2012 Olympic Games, featuring a series of 29 designs depicting many of the events of the games, that cemented my interest in UK coins and became the catalyst for the Double The Money challenge.
This series caught my attention and caused me to examine my change more closely and it soon became clear that these coins were simply the latest addition to the UK’s coinage.
I have long been familiar with (and indeed very fond of) the distinctive notes issued by Scotland’s banks and their reguar release of special editions, such as last year’s celebrated £10 Diamond Jubilee notes from the Royal Bank of Scotland and the internationally acclaimed series of £5 notes issued to celebrate the key role played by St Andrews in the development in the game of golf.
But I soon realised that there has long been a similar level of variety in what I had previously assumed was the stable and uninteresting range of UK coins.
In addition to several regional currency sets covering areas such as the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, there have been many special edition 50 pence and two pound coins.
So, here is a full inventory of the UK coins I currently hold after starting to accumulate these last summer:
